From the Superintendent:

Four-Day, Free Food, Awards, and More!

Yes, you heard right, the Garden Valley Schools will run on a modified

4-day-a-week calendar next year. After several public hearings, surveys, and

serious conversations the school board adopted the model at its regular May

meeting. We truly understand that everyone is not pleased with this decision, and we are all dedicated to making it work well for each family, student, and the community

School is now scheduled to start at 8:05 and end at 3:52 p.m. Classes are Monday through Thursday beginning August 23rd and ending May 26th. The Board worked very hard to keep the dates of attendance close to "normal" and end by Memorial Day. There are three exceptions to the no Friday calendar and those are the Fridays following Labor Day, Idaho Human Rights Day, and Presidents Day. School will be in session on these Fridays:  September 10th, January 21st, and February 18th.

With a longer workday teachers will still be on the job many Fridays and will provide tutoring, makeup and enrichment learning for selected students. Of course the District office will still be open year-around and regular work days.

Our new calendar is posted on the website so please take a look at it. This is new to us too, but I am confident we can make it work as it is supposed to and next year will be a great year for Wolverines.

I am pleased to announce our Summer Food Program again this year. Yes, free and nutritious meals to kids age 1 thru 18. Please see the flyer inside! Kudos to Mrs. Updike and our cafeteria team for their work in gaining the funding, and for providing this great service to our valley.

And I am very excited to share an award with you. Garden Valley was recognized for "Exemplary Achievement Status" in the Schools of Excellence in Idaho contest and will receive an Award of Excellence Certificate. This competition is through the High School Activities Association and weighs school's academic success, athletic success, and citizenship and sportsmanship - to include fan behavior! Hey, hey, you all helped win it. Thanks Wolverines for making GVSD a great place to learn, compete, and of course a great place for all of us to work.

Have a super summer and be sure to call (462-3756), email (mtomlin@gvsd.net), or stop by when you can. The coffee is usually on, and I always appreciate hearing from you.

` Mike
